RAINNE has opened up for Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello and more + INTERVIEW!
Why did you choose the genre of music you create?
Annie Dingwall: Justin and I have always listened to a wide range of genres, and for a long time we played lots of songs in all these different genres. Staying in one genre lane has never been the main concern for us (and we blend many all the time), but we did want to have a signature sound, so we started to pinpoint the elements that made our arrangements and songs unique. As we were honing in on our sound it became clear that there were certain elements that were consistent in our all of songs across the board, so we took those elements and used them as the basis of “Dark Pop” style. We always lean into darker, rock-ier, more dramatic songs.
What was the spark of your musical journey?
Justin Klunk: Personally, it was the stage. I’ve always loved performing and entertaining, and getting to put on a performance that can positively affect someone is the greatest feeling. Annie and I have always been rooted in performance – and the spark of our working relationship was through live shows. That feeling of wanting to hit the stage has never left us, and I don’t think it ever will.
AD: Discovering songwriting is when I really fell in love with music, and it has been the catalyst for my entire music career. Writing a song and seeing people respond to it is one of the best feelings in the world.
What was the inspiration for your new single "SIN"?
AD: The line “I feel a sin coming on” had been in my notes for a while before I actually sat down with Shane Stevens and VANYO to write it. It was one of those lines that just came to me on a random afternoon out of nowhere, but it was such a sexy and evocative line that I knew a cool song could be crafted around it. Shane and VANYO definitely saw that same vision and we ended up with “SIN” as we know it.
JK: We’ve always wanted to have a song that people could just dance and vibe to, so when Annie showed me “SIN”, I knew it would be a great addition to our set. We love to walk the line of dark and sexy, and “SIN” added an extra element of danceable groove that we love.
What’s your favorite part of being a musician or making music?
JK: My favorite part about being a musician is getting to experience something new on a daily basis. We’re constantly creating and working on our craft, which allows us to make each performance its own unique experience. Being able to constantly feel like your art is growing is so addicting.
AD: While I love pretty much every aspect of making music, it is when we get to play the songs live that does it for me. There is nothing like the shared experience of a song that truly moves people.
Has anything surprised you in the process of making it in Hollywood?
JK: I don’t know that anything has been particularly surprising. Challenging? Definitely. But every one of our friends and mentors have always warned us that pursuing a career in music is a tough journey. It’s hard to define exactly what “making it” is, since everyone’s scale for success is different, but I do know that it has been a challenging but rewarding journey so far, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.
