EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
IYVES! It’s no coincidence that your new single “Gold” has been on repeat the past week in the Gold Hand Girls office. We’re a big fan of anything gold, ourselves. Could you tell us a little bit about your writing process? When you sit down to write, do you already have the melody in your head, or do lyrics come first? What is Gold about?
My writing process depends on my set up and who I might be collaborating with but, I am almost always a melody person first and then depending on what the feel of the track and melody are the lyrics/ concept sort of write itself. "Gold" is about coming across and love you have never experienced before and honestly, didn't even know was possible. It's that moment where you feel like it might be too good to be true and are skeptical yet, you are still intrigued and before you know it you're pulled in and can't get enough!
How old are you, and where are you from? Does where you're from reflect in your music or lyricism at all?
I am 28 years old and from Boulder, Colorado. I find that I absolutely pull my love of the outdoors and organic sounds into my music. Living in such an urban place (Brooklyn), I find I am often fantasying about nature and my nostalgia for home and mountains is at an all time high.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
This question always really stumps me because I don't know that I have a single one! I grew up listening to my parents love of music -- classic rock and soul, the Beatles and Cat Stevens on repeat in my dads car, my mom playing gospel music on the radio on Sunday's and then being a child of the 90s -- Destinys Child, Christina Aguilera and TLC -- these are all what filled my ears growing up and lead me to become the musician I am today.
What advice do you have for younger women in the music industry?
My advice is being you always looks and sounds the best. It's so easy to compare yourself to others or think you have to be something more than what you already are but, it's just the opposite -- we need you, no one can be you. Another, thing is vulnerability and working through fear. I think as artists we are given a huge gift and responsibility to be honest and be heard - so if people are listening (which they are) don't shy away or beat around the bush, say just what you want and truly want to say.
