INTERVIEW: The Aquadolls
AQUADOLLS! How are you? Can we start with something potentially average but fun for the audience? Astrology. Give us each your big three! If you don’t know, your sun sign works :) Or no answer, that’s punk too.
Melissa: I’m alive and breathing, so very thankful for that! I’m an Aries and my birthday is coming up on April 12th, so I am fully living my Aries season fantasy! Is it punk rock to have your family lose your birth certificate?! I sadly don’t know my birth time, so I only know I'm Aries! Most people say we can be hot headed, but I’m a very lax and mellow person so I feel like I must have some water signs within me. Must be the aquadoll inside of me!
Keilah: Good! I'm a Scorpio sun, Sagittarius moon, and Libra rising!
Jackie: I’m a Sagittarius sun, Pisces moon and Virgo rising!
Who’s on your Spotify repeat as of today?
Melissa: 10,000 Gecs by 100 Gecs, Sassy Scene by 6arelyhuman, and That Kid’s entire discography on shuffle cuz they’re all bangers. I’m in a dancey mood today!
Keilah: My top 5 in my “on repeat” playlist are:
“Left Eye” - Kreayshawn
“Atta Girl” - Heavenly
“Love You Funny” - Gymshorts
“Centipede” - FIDLAR
“Across The Universe” - Fiona Apple
Jackie: To be honest I don't know how to check that but I’m definitely listening to The Pretty Reckless, Annie Lennox and Shampoo on a daily basis! Oh and Aerosmith of course!
Self-love and acceptance are huge right now. What does self-care while on tour look like for you? Do you have any tour routines or group traditions?
Melissa: It seems self-explanatory but sleep is so key to getting through touring. It helps keep us on track, our brains working so we can gear up for long drives, stay healthy, and try our best to relax as much as possible amidst the chaos of travel and the constant “go, go, go” that touring feels like! Rest really becomes your BFF. We also really love to find yummy local food spots, so if any of you have any recommendations, please share them! We always end up finding really delicious places!
Keilah: I definitely think sleep is number one! Squeezing in a skincare routine when we have the time goes a super long way! Taking time to tune out outside noise and maybe alone time via taking a walk or just putting headphones in and watching a tv show I love really helps with the grounding and takes me out of robot tour mode I think.
Jackie: WE LOVE SELF-LOVE! Singing my heart out basically anywhere is how I feel most in tune with myself. It just makes me happy and having dance parties by myself is how I put a smile on my face! But sleep is definitely number 1 for health and minimizing anxiety and stress! I love running and roller skating to boost my mood too!!
Aquadolls 2019 ACL set was UNREAL! I was there front and center. How do you anticipate this tour and the set list will be different from your previous runs?
Melissa: We will be playing songs from our new album Charmed coming out June 2nd! A good load of them we haven’t played live before, so I’m really excited to try out new jams and see how people react to them! You can also expect to hear some deep cuts and classics from all the prior albums as well. Hoping that it’ll be a nice blend of new and older material, but all pretty upbeat and dance/mosh inducing!
Keilah: I’m prepping for this tour to be the most stress free venture we take!! It can get super hectic sometimes so I’m prepping as much as I can beforehand to make sure when we’re on the road we just have to focus on rocking out and putting on a really great show for everyone.
Jackie: Good question, haven’t processed much but I know it’s gonna kick ass and amp the energy up!
“Sneaky,” your latest release, is fully charged with angst, heartbreak and confusion. What does the word sneaky mean to you?
Melissa: In context of the song, to me “sneaky” means I’m a dirty little secret. I want something more to come out of this late night hookup, like a relationship?! I deserve to be loved and not something they feel needs to be hush-hush. Through these frustrations came the inspiration of this song’s story, and the gritty guitars add to the angst of dealing with these emotions.
Let's talk about Sublime with Rome. Aquadolls opened for the entire 2022 summer tour, did you get stoned af before the gigs or what? Kidding but not. Opening for Sublime with Rome I’m sure is an incredible experience. Have any fun or random memories from the tour?
Melissa: It really meant so much to tour with them! Especially growing up in Orange County, CA, all the cool kids would always be bumping Sublime, so to get to be a part of the continued legacy with Rome was truly a mindblowing and wonderful experience! I hope we get to do more stuff with them in the future! It was definitely a dank tour *wink wink*.
Keilah: I’m actually not much of a stoner but I definitely crouched behind a staircase or 2 with an apple if you know what I mean!! It was so great getting to hang out with those guys everyday, the Sublime with Rome crew turned into my favorite lunch / dinner time buddies and getting to
spend so much time with them was so special! We got to meet the most down to earth people on that tour and it’s one I’ll never forget!
Jackie: This experience was incredible! Something none of us will ever forget. We got really lucky and all the people on this tour taught us so much and were so kind! It was like a big circus family trip but with the most professional experienced people in the rock n roll industry! The lighting guys were so nice and even let me work lights some nights with them for Sublime and Incubus. It was incredible! The roadies became our besties and I learned so much from Incubus’s drum tech, Ricky Bobby! He took me under his wing and it was all because he saw my drum set and said yesss and then saw I was wearing a Harley Davidson shirt and he decided from there that he’d teach me the ropes! Thank god for Harley Davidson haha!
